The Millses

Mr. and Mrs. W. Blaine Mills celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, April 12, 1996, at Antrim House Restaurant in Hagerstown.

The dinner was hosted by their son, Sidney Mills, daughter, Nancy Newkirk, and her husband, Jim, and son, Eric Mills, and his wife, Patti.

Their four grandchildren also were present.

Mr. and Mrs. Mills were married April 12, 1946, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring by the Rev. Luther Hare.

Mrs. Mills is the former Alice Kreigh, daughter of the late William and Ottie Kreigh.

Mr. Mills is the son of the late George and Rosie Mills.

Mr. Mills is retired after serving 36 years as postmaster of the Clear Spring post office.

Mrs. Mills is a homemaker and also worked for 18 years as a lunch assistant at Clear Spring Elementary School.

The couple has resided in Clear Spring since 1946.

(Obituary of W. Blaine Mills: "Walter Blaine Mills, 78, of Clear Spring, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Washington County Hospital. Born Aug. 18, 1924, in Charlton, Md., he was the son of the late George Walter Mills and Rosie Miller Mills. He was a 1942 graduate of Williamsport High School. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring, where he served on the church council, the committee for the new educational building and the choir, and was a Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He was the postmaster in Clear Spring from 1948 until retiring in 1984. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the 8th Armored Division 399th Field Artillery during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 in Clear Spring, AARP and the Clear Spring Lions Club, from which he received the Lion of the Year award in 1972. He coached the American Legion Baseball team and was chairman of the Community Recreation Playground Committee; served as secretary of the Clear Spring Ambulance Club and chairman of the 25th Anniversary Program of the Clear Spring Fire Co. He was president of the Band Boosters and the P.T.A.; and had been chairman of the Community Committee for the new Clear Spring High School. He is survived by his wife, Alice Patty Kriegh Mills, whom he married April 12, 1946; one daughter, Nancy A. Newkirk of Hagerstown; two sons, Sidney B. Mills of Hagerstown, and Eric L. Mills of Roanoke, Va.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Shank and Jeanette Kreps; and one brother, George R. Mills. Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, Clear Spring. The Rev. Elaine Swinehart will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, with military honors by Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 198, Clear Spring, MD 21722; or Clear Spring Lions Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. (Obituary of Alice Mills: "ALICE FRANCES "PATTY" MILLS, 87, formerly of Clear Spring, and a resident of Julia Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown, Md., went to be with her Lord on Dec. 25, 2011, at Julia Manor. Born Nov. 7, 1924, in Clear Spring, Md., she was the daughter of the late William Francis Kreigh and Alice Ottie Boward Kreigh. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Walter Blaine Mills, in 2003. She was a graduate of the Clear Spring High School Class of 1942. She was a lifetime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Clear Spring, where she sang in the church choir for 30 years and taught Sunday school for 10 years. She was formerly employed by J. J. Newberry Co. of Hagerstown, and was also employed by the Washington County Board of Education for 18 years. She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Alice Newkirk of Hagerstown; two sons, Sidney Blaine Mills of Hagerstown, and Eric Lynn Mills and wife, Patti, of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Emily Poole of Hagerstown and Sara Jane Ridenour of Smithsburg; grandchildren, Jeremy Newkirk and wife, Kim, Lesley Lightfoot and husband, Philip, and Ryan Mills and Blaine Mills; and three great-grandchildren, Emma Newkirk, Harrison Newkirk and Benjamin Lightfoot. Services will be held Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Elaine Swinehart will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery in Clear Spring. The family will receive friends at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home Inc. on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after noon.
