The Mertzes

Mr. and Mrs. James Mertz, formerly of Keedysville, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, April 6, 1996.

An open house at their home in West Virginia was hosted by their grandsons and their families and their daughter, Odessa Berger, and son-in-law, George Berger.

Many friends and family members were present.

Mrs. Mertz is the former Elda Spade of Hancock.

She is the daughter of Beatrice Spade and the late Leslie Spade.

She is a homemaker.

Mr. Mertz is the son of the late Hubert and Mae Keyfauver Mertz.

He served with the U.S. Air force during World War II.

He is retired from Mack Trucks Inc.

(Obituary of James Mertz: "JAMES MERLE MERTZ, 97, of Hagerstown, MD went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 9, 2018. Born in Keedysville, MD on September 19, 1920, he was the son of the late, Hubert and Emma (Keyfauver) Mertz. James was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army. He attended Mt. View Baptist Church for twenty years. James was employed with Mack Truck for twenty years retiring in 1985. He loved gardening and especially tending to his roses. While traveling with his wife, they worked in the Mission Fields out west. James is survived by a daughter, Odessa Berger and a grandson, Brian Barnhart, Clear Spring, MD. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Elda Mertz on July 30, 2012; a brother, David Martz; a grandson, Michael Barnhart and a son-in-law, George Berger. Services will be held at 11am, Friday, June 15, 2018 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. Hagerstown, MD. Rev. Sean Brumbaugh will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. View Baptist Church, 12107 Walnut Point Rd., Hagerstown, MD 21740 or Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.")

(Obituary of Elda Mertz: "ELDA ODESSA "PINKY" MERTZ, 85, of Martinsburg, W.Va., went to be with the Lord, surrounded by her loving family, Monday, July 30, 2012, at her home. Born Aug. 23, 1926, in Pinesburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Leslie Randolph and Beatrice G. Truax Spade. She was a homemaker. She attended Mount View Baptist Church in Hagerstown, Md. She enjoyed traveling throughout the country with her husband, sewing, weaving, making afghans and rugs, and especially spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband, James M. Mertz of Martinsburg; daughter, Odessa M. Berger and her husband, George, of Hagerstown; sister, Viola Weigle of Hedgesville, W.Va.; sister, Phyllis Thompson of Hancock, Md.; brother, Arlie Spade of Elkton, Md.; brother, Jearld Spade of New Castle, Del.; grandson, Brian S. Barnhart of Clear Spring, Md.; and grandson, Michael S. Barnhart of Clear Spring. She was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers. The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, Md. The funeral home will be open Thursday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, with Pastor Jeffrey Anthony officiating. Interment will be in Boonsboro Cemetery, Boonsboro, Md. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25403.")
